How the Duality of PageRanking Works

Understanding the PageRank mechanism will give you a key insight as to how webmasters can use the information to increase a web page’s ranking in the Google search engine report pages. It is based on a unique set of algorithms that evaluate certain data about a web page, thus assessing that page’s popularity and relevance. A more technical approach defines PageRank as being a link analysis algorithm.

There are two versions of this system which give rise to the expression: the dual nature of PageRank. In the first instance you have the real PageRank, and in the second instance you have the Toolbar PageRank. The Toolbar version (employed by webmasters) uses values from 1 to 10 to “score” web pages and to simulate the real PageRank ratings.

Although they have the same building principles - build quality back links, the real PageRank's values are much higher and can even reach millions.

According to the popular toolbar PR mechanism, all the indexed pages are separated into 11 different ranges, based on their appointed value.

Looking at two web pages, where one has a PageRank of 2 and the other has 4, the difference is not merely 2. In real PageRank scoring, the difference is multiplied many times higher.

Regrettably, nobody actually knows exactly how Google works out the PR value of a web page or where the grades cross from one rank to the next.

Yet we do understand one thing about Google’s workings and it is important to understand this in the dual nature of PageRank.We know that each level has a value which is exponentially larger than the previous level, and it is this that makes the transition harder to make. So in understanding the PageRank mechanism, you must be fully aware that the difference for a transition from page 3 to 4 is so much greater than the previous transition was from page 2 to 3.


Let’s take a look at a few key points to help to gel the understanding of PageRank analysis in your mind:

1. Google assesses web pages, not websites.

2. The graduations shown on the Toolbar relate to a very much wider span of the real PageRank resulting in a comparison variation that can be either large or small.

3. Several different links that come from the same domain only count as 1 vote in the PR equation.

4. Each Webpage is borne with an initial PageRank valued at 0.15. The figure is given the formula (1-d), where d is called the "damping factor", with a value of 0.85.

5. In order for a web page to reach the top scoring end of the Toolbar, it must continue to amass an increasing quantity of inbound links.

6. Every three months, the PageRank Toolbar is changed. In the meantime, the Real PageRank gets continuous updates, meaning that it is always more current. This explains why certain web pages appear higher in the search engine report pages than other web pages with higher figures. This highlights another difference in the dual nature of PageRank.

7. PageRank is a matter of web popularity - the more popular a page gets the more will be referenced through back links by (preferably) already trusted websites.

After Google assembles a quantity of web pages within its index, it then rates them for integrity and popularity by assessing the quantity of links referring back to those pages. But there are other considerations too.


PageRank Dynamics in Action:

- A web page receives PageRank by getting inbound links from other pages.

- Links that originate from pages within the same website, or that originate from completely different websites are awarded similar ratings just as long as the other web pages have the same PageRank scores.

- Web pages won't lose PageRank because they link to other pages. It's just passed along to the linked webpages. Google appreciates an open policy for relevant outbound linking as opposed to PageRank sculpting practices.

- To further understand the PageRank mechanism you should know that when PageRank is handed on to other web pages, the sum is divided by the quantity of outgoing links from that page.

- Finally, due to the damping factor, an incoming link is maximized at 85% of its value.
